MMA: Behind the UFC on FOX 2 numbers: Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis fight complete statistical breakdown

UFC light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Phil Davis face off at UFC on FOX 2, on Jan. 28, 2012, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

This Sat., Jan. 28, 2012, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight standouts Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will duke it out at UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago, Illinois, for the opportunity to face current division champion Jon Jones.

It’s been a long time coming for “Suga,” who’s been engaged in a long running war of words with “Bones.” Their beef can be traced all the way back to the moment Jones agreed to fight Evans, his former friend and training partner.

For “Mr. Wonderful,” he’s been given no guarantee for a title shot if he is to emerge victorious. He’s the underdog as far as the odds are concerned, but the 9-0 Davis has every intention of keeping his spotless record just that.

Regardless of who comes out on top, the main event is certain to be full of fireworks and thrilling highlights for mixed martial arts (MMA) fans who tune in.

After the jump, we’ll give you a close look behind the numbers of Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis:

The number crunchers at CompuStrike took the time to dig deep into the fight annals and retrieve the stats that build the framework for this fight. The numbers collected have been based on 13 fight averages for Rashad Evans and five fight averages for Phil Davis.

Both of these gentlemen are known for their high wrestling pedigree, but neither is necessarily afraid to stand and trade. Who do the numbers show to be the better all-around striker?

Total Strikes:

Evans — 45 of 97
Davis — 55 of 107

Percentage:

Evans — 46 percent
Davis — 51 percent

Total Power Strikes Landed:

Evans — 28
Davis — 41

Total Non-Power Strikes Landed:

Evans — 17
Davis — 14

If you’re like me, you’re a little floored by those findings. Davis looks to land more often, be more precise and land more power shots.

How about when you isolate the punches and elbows?

Total Arm Strikes Landed:

Evans — 22 of 61
Davis — 2 of 19

Percentage of Arm Strikes Landed:

Evans — 36 percent
Davis — 11 percent

Power Strikes Landed:

Evans — 12
Davis — 2

Non-Power Strikes Landed

Evans — 10
Davis — 0

That sounds a little bit more like it. Davis has said that he’s not nervous about trading shots with Evans, but the numbers strongly suggest that a boxing match would not be in his favor.

Here’s what the leg strike picture looks like:

Total Leg Strikes Landed:

Evans — 4 of 5
Davis — 14 of 21

Percentage of Leg Strikes Landed:

Evans — 80 percent
Davis — 72 percent

Power Leg Strikes Landed:

Evans — 3
Davis — 8

Non-Power Leg Strikes Landed:

Evans — 1
Davis — 6

Based on this data, Evans appears to be a bit more accurate, but Davis is more active and scores more with power.

Finally, the aspect everyone is most curious: The ground game.

Let’s check it out:

Ground Strikes Landed:

Evans — 19 of 31
Davis — 39 of 66

Percentage:

Evans — 61 percent
Davis — 62 percent

Power Ground Strikes Landed:

Evans — 13
Davis — 31

Non-Power Ground Strikes Landed:

Evans — 6
Davis — 8

Takedowns:

Evans –45 of 69 (65 percent)
Davis — 16 of 26 (62 percent)

Submission Attempts:

Evans — 0
Davis — 3

Dominant Positions:

Evans — 21
Davis — 27

The advantage very much appears to be tilting towards Davis. They’re both great wrestlers, but if the fight hits the mat, Evans may be in trouble.

What do these statistics do for you? Does any of the data surprise you or is it about what you expected? Share your (now) well-informed opinions with us in the comments section below.

MMA: Dana White Thinks Revealing Fighters’ Actual Salaries Would Be Harmful

UFC president Dana White believes revealing his fighters’ actual salaries would be damaging to their lives.

On the same day first baseman Prince Fielder finalized a nine-year deal with the Detroit Tigers worth 4 million, White says people should not be envious of Fielder’s seemingly magnificent position.

“You don’t want to be Prince Fielder over the next three years,” White told reporters on Thursday. “When people know — his life is going to be horrible. His whole life is going to change. He thought is was bad before? With the s–t he had going in his life? Everyone and their mother is coming after that 214.”

Since the UFC is a privately-owned company, they are not required to make their numbers public. They have to report the fighter purses to the commission, but those numbers don’t tell the actual story of a fighter’s final earnings once bonuses and possible pay-per-view cuts are factored in.

White recalled meeting FOX executives for the first time and telling them how much fighters actually make. FOX executives were blown away and questioned why White wouldn’t discuss the salaries in public for good press.

“The FOX guys were like, ‘Holy s–t, these guys make this much money? Why don’t you plaster this everywhere? This is the thing that will put you guys over the top. This is the thing people love to see and talk about and all.’”

As the saying goes, “Mo’ money, mo’ problems” and White is refusing to put fighters in a position where they could attract negative attention.

“I’ve had these conversations with Mike Tyson,” White said. “Mike said when his money was reported, his f–kin’ life was miserable. I’m not doing it. So just because you don’t know everything. You don’t have to know everything. And to be honest with you, it’s not your f–kin’ business. They’re making a lot of money.”

BJJ NEWS: Learn to make a Gracie Diet-cornerstone juice and jump-start your Jiu-Jitsu

A typical Gracie table at lunch or snack time: açaí, lima orange, watermelon, papaya juices and and white cheeses

A typical Gracie table at lunch or snack time: açaí, lima orange, watermelon, papaya juices and and white cheeses

Are you schooled in how to make a good watermelon juice and eliminate all that pulp that weighs so heavy on the stomach, like Grandmasters Carlos and Helio Gracie used to?

Watch how Carlos Gracie’s grandson Marco Gracie Imperial does it, in the following video.

The big secret to getting your watermelon juice just the way the Jiu-Jitsu forefathers liked it is to get your hands on a bag made of fabric just porous enough to let the watery part through while keeping the solid stuff in.

Now to go with the juice, grab a slab of whole wheat pita bread, a chunk of white cheese, and there you have a proper snack to get your engines revved up before training.

Got another recipe on your wish list? Send us your request and we’ll stick it on the GRACIEMAG.com menu.

BJJ NEWS: Roger Gracie: “I’m changing my game”

Roger Gracie at the 2012 European Open

“I’m changing my game,” said Roger Gracie this Friday behind the scenes at the 2012 European Championship, the welcoming Jiu-Jitsu tournament going on in Lisbon, Portugal, until Sunday.

“For my whole career as a black belt I got used to starting out slow and calm in my matches. I never felt the need to go all out against my opponents during the first two minutes, since a match lasts ten. I always started out slow and brought up the rhythm progressively, hitting max intensity towards the end. However, ever since losing in MMA [to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal by knockout at Strikeforce in September 2011] it dawned on me; if I don’t change my way of fighting, I’ll lose again,” said the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-London, England transplant.

The Gracie gave hints that he won’t be able to be an “explosive MMA fighter” so long as he remains a, shall we say, “excessively calm” Jiu-Jitsu competitor. The essence [Jiu-Jitsu] is what dictates the rules for all the other facets of Roger Gracie, even when he steps into the ring sporting gloves and trunks.

IN THE NAME OF THE SON AND JIU-JITSU

The Gracie gets emotional (teary eyed) as he remembers the moment he first caught sight of his son after his fight with “King Mo”. “I don’t want to ever feel like that again; my son is the most important thing to me, and I want to be the best example possible for him; so I can’t let myself go home defeated,” said Roger.

“So I’m focused on my MMA career now. I believe that, in the gi, this year I’ll only compete at the Worlds. That’s why I didn’t sign up for the European. I’d really like to compete at a high-level championship but my priority right now is MMA training. That was the big career lesson I learned from losing: I have to be more determined, enter the fight at a more intense pace. In Jiu-Jitsu, I often get taken down early on, but I have around eight minutes to recover, which is plenty of time. In MMA, one punch or a knee can end the fight instantly; there’s no time to recover from a knockout.”

Through the bustle of attending to the fans, students and friends surrounding him, Roger took the reporter’s question pertaining to the absolute black belt title in Lisbon: In the end, who’s going to be the big winner of the 2012 European Championship.

“Well, Rodolfo Vieira is the favorite, there’s no denying it. He’s been coming up with great results. But everyone has a chance. I got to see Lagarto training up close, for instance, and he’s in excellent form. But if what you’re asking is that I point out the favorite, there’s no denying it’s Rodolfo.”

BJJ NEWS: One eye on Europeans, the other on Abu Dhabi

Guto Campos sinks a triangle at 2010 Europeans.

On the week of the 2012 European Jiu-Jitsu Championship, GRACIEMAG.com caught up with Guto Campos while he was overseeing the makeover his school in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre is undergoing. The Southern Brazilian was mulling over ideas regarding the female dressing room with the architect, but at the same time he was laying out his plans for the season.

“I didn’t get to be at the Euros [he won the absolute division there in 2010] because of this refurbishment. But next week I’ll head to São Paulo to train with my teammates at Atos, focusing on the Abu Dhabi tryouts in Gramado. I want to secure my spot in the Middle East so I can go into the IBJJF Pan with my mind at ease. And I’ll keep up with the Europeans over the internet; I want to see who’s at the head of the pack at the start of the season.”

EYES ON OPPONENTS ON THE MATS ABROAD

Another Southern Brazilian who is sitting out the European Open, due to injury, but will be keenly watching the results as they surface is Vinicius Corrales, otherwise known as “Pulga”, from Sul Jiu-Jitsu academy: “I got back to training this week; I want to be solid for the Gramado tryouts. The results from the Europeans will help me analyze my likely opponents.” Last year Pulga won the No-Gi championship and took runner-up in the Gi Jiu-Jitsu championship in Abu Dhabi, losing in the final of the under-83kg division to Cláudio Calasans, Guto’s training partner at Atos.

Now Rio de Janeiro native Igor Silva (team Brasa) is in Portugal and planning to take the first half of the competition-year by storm, making a stab at the Europeans, Gramado tryouts, and the Pan. Sport Jiu-Jitsu superstars Marcus Bochecha, Moacir Mendes, Mário Reis, Giovane Guedes and Bruno Frazatto and others are all tipped to be at the Abu Dhabi tryouts in Brazil’s south as well.

So the first half of the Jiu-Jitsu year is indeed promising. The Abu Dhabi tryouts in Gramado by themselves will serve up top-caliber competition. And on March 10 and 11 the WPJJC tryouts in San Diego will bring even more excitement.

What do you think, who will be the big names to arise early this season, from the Euros to the Pan and on to Abu Dhabi?
